New Crosswalk Parking Law - Drivers Beware

There is a new law in the State of California that prohibits cars from parking within 20 feet of marked and unmarked crosswalks. California Vehicle Code section 22500(n) prohibits parking "[w]ithin 20 feet of the vehicle approach side of any marked or unmarked crosswalk or within 15 feet of any crosswalk where a curb extension is present." What this Means for Pedestrians

Additional space gives drivers more time to see pedestrians entering a crosswalk and safely come to a stop. This new law will result in fewer pedestrian crosswalk crashes and will have a big impact on pedestrian safety.

What this Means for Drivers

You could be sued for parking too close to a crosswalk. If a pedestrian is hit in a crosswalk, they could make claims against the responsible driver as well as against cars that violated Vehicle Code section 22500(n).

Even worse, cities are not required to paint the curb near crosswalks, so there won't be any indication of the legal parking spots. It's up to the driver to measure the safe distance. Be careful when parking on the street.
